Canon has this PDF OCR integrated into the scan software included with even some of it less expensive scanners. Still, one wished that Epson has integrated a good OCR engine into its scanner software so one doesn't always have to run the resulting PDFs through another program. At the time I purchased this canner, it was bundled with Adobe Photoshop Elements (very useful, really Photoshop lite), and ABBY OCR software (have not used, have used Adobe Acrobat for OCR). The Epson scanner comes with some decent scanning and complementary software that allows for default settings, or a professional mode where one can fine-tune the settings for better individual results. Of course, the better way to transfer slides to digital files might be to use a pro service that does this, or a specialized scanner designed for sides. I've done a few color slides with this scanner, and the results are variable, but then nothing is going to look as good as the old Kodachrome slides, so more often more editing is required than with the printed photo scans to get something acceptable. It does an adequate, but not great, job with the color photo prints, so if you want the scanned file to match closer to the prints, you'll have to use photo editing software for some tweaking.
I like these Epsons as they've done well for me for most of my home use where most of the use is scanning documents to black-and-white and color PDFs or graphics formats, and occasional printed photos. Back this item about 7 years ago back in 2011 to replace a similar older Epson model that died, and this one is still chugging along.
